Verifiable and Scalable Carbon Emissions Reporting for Cloud Computing
Sustainability initiatives and regulatory requirements mean that data centre operators and their customers need to report the carbon emissions arisen from the use of computing resources. At present, these reports are neither verifiable nor required to be independently audited. Data centre operators are not incentivised to accurately report all emissions for business and competitive reasons. How might one find out if a data centre operator is lying about their emissions? In this talk, I will provide an overview of the techniques we have applied around zero-knowledge proofs, that allow companies to verify emissions reported based on their activities, holding data centre operators accountable for producing accurate data, but without revealing any business secrets.
